The World Belongs to Those Who Show Up
Our small town of Washington, Missouri recently elected its first female Mayor.
Five non-partisan candidates were on the ballot. It was heartening to see such good people from our community step up to offer their services for this key position.
During the campaign, we had the privilege of hearing the candidates present themselves and summarize their approach to city governance should they be elected. Sandy Lucy, our soon to be elected Mayor, informed her audience that she wasn't running so much on a platform of change as one of continued progress. She said her plans were to "listen" and see what constituents needed and wanted. She promised that "civility" would be of utmost importance as city business was being conducted. And finally, she shared her motto, and although I did not make notes, I remember it this way: "The World Belongs to Those Who Show up."
Sandy is certainly a person who has shown up. She has shown up for so many leadership roles and followership roles. She has dedicated untold hours to community betterment projects. And it's not like she has nothing else to do, for Pete's sake.
She is one of the many leaders in our community who make darned sure that Washington, MO Shows Up. Because of Sandy and other community leaders, our little town shows up on very important radar screens all over the world.
We are extremely blessed with local, grass roots leadership in our community, along with a large number of extremely energized and passionate volunteers who are committed to continuously improving our community. Volunteers dedicate thousands of hours every year to help Washington Show Up. Our community is richer because of those who volunteer their time and money to make it all happen. No matter how crazy the world gets, this is something we can absolutely count on in our little town.
I am thinking that there is an addition I would offer to Mayor Sandy's motto. I believe "The World Belongs to Those Who Show Up.....and Add Value."
Mayor Sandy, community leaders and volunteers dedicate their time and energy so that we who live and do business here can look forward to "Our Best Decade Yet!" Thank you, Mayor Sandy, for Showing Up and Adding Value.
And now your coaching challenge, should you choose to accept it.
