Summer Gardening Checklist
At Premier Nursery & Garden Center we offer the following general guidelines for summer landscape and garden maintenance.
¨ Provide your plants and yard extra water as needed. Summer brings drought to many areas of the country. The single greatest cause of plant loss is incorrect watering – either too little or too much.
¨ When plants are first put into the ground they should receive a thorough soaking. Established plants require less water than first year plants. If unsure when to water, put your finger in two or three inches under the soil. If it’s dry, water. Early morning watering is best; afternoon sun evaporates too much moisture and evening watering encourages pests. But you must be careful not to over water. If your busy life results in a random watering schedule, consult a professional about automatic irrigation methods, such as timers, to protect your landscaping investment.
¨ Too much rain coupled with warm temperatures can create fungus problems in the landscape. Be alert to these before they get out of hand.
¨ Replace dead annuals to ensure colorful blooms all summer long. Annuals are an easy, inexpensive way to perk up any yard.
¨ Keep grass mowed to a recommended height of 3 inches.
¨ Harvest vegetable gardens and fruit orchards gardens.
¨ Control weeds with mulch, weed mesh fabrics, or by using chemical solutions.
¨ Rejuvenate annual and perennial flowers by deadheading – pinching or cutting off dead
heads. Petunias, snapdragons, salvia and marigolds appreciate this upkeep, as do roses.
¨ Monitor your landscape for pests. Be an observant gardener and note insect or disease
problems before they destroy the beauty of the landscape.
¨ Apply a second, midsummer dose of fertilizer to young shrubs and trees.
¨ Keep a garden journal – note what you’d like to see more of next summer. Fall and winter
are great months to begin planning summer landscapes.
