Is there anyone out there that knows of grants or financial aid? Hi Danielle-- I was thinking about you and your son and wondering how you are doing. Please let us know... Sincerely, CJ |

Hello Danielle-- so sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. My friend lost her active duty military husband to illness in 2004. When I spoke to her again in 2006, she told me about a phone call she had received out of the blue telling her she was eligible for a $400,000 payment. At first she thought it was some sort of scam, but it turned out to be very true. I'm pretty sure it wasn't SGLI/insurance related, but I can't for the life of me remember the exact reason why she got it. I don't know if you've received that sort of payment or not, but if you haven't, a great place to ask about it would be at your closest Vet Center. I used to work at one in the early 90's, and one of the many things the great counselors did there was to help out military widows with paperwork. They may know more about it. And it's free. God bless you, Danielle Sincerely, CJ |

Daniel, I further recommend you contact the VA. Here's how. The VA deals with a large number of Veteran AND survivor dependent issues to include mortgage issues. If you need to contact the VA, go to: www.va.gov Click on the "contact us" button Draft your concern. Be clear, concise, and complete. If you are a surviving dependent of a service member killed in action, please make that clear. The VA advertises that they will answer within 5 days, but generally are much quicker. Alternatively, you can call the national VA call center at: 800 827-1000. The folks answering your call can direct the call to the appropriate area. If you call is about a mortgage issue and / or VA loan, we recommend you have all of your documents handy to avoid wasting your time. |

Danielle, My apologies for the delay in responding. I am going to offer a couple of thoughts below, but want you to know that I have contacted a friend involved with the VA who may have some ideas on VA resources available to you.. Please check back or contact me via email for personal follow up. Sometimes it helps to have a phone conversation and / or email contact to get specifics. Recommend you immediately contact the folks at the following link: http://www.debtprotectionlaw.com/index-1.php Note a phone number at the bottom of the page. Call that number and ask for Dori Avila. This is a law firm that specializes in foreclosures that under certain circumstances offer pro bono (free) services for Military Families. Also, recommend you IMMEDIATELY call your state of legal residence Senators and your district's Congressmen! No kidding, call them now. You may or may not talk to the actual official, but insist on talking to a staffer in the area of Military affairs. Let the know the circumstances and ask for help. Ask your family and friends to do the same! Call your lender (both if two trusts) and ask to speak to the loan mitigation department and ask about loan mods. You may save some time by checking out their web site first and look for the correct department which would be something like "Help for Homeowners." If you get not response, then the next step is somewhat controversial and you may / may not be comfortable with this. Contact a local TV station and let them know the circumstances. Finally, we have a link on this site (below) that has a ton of info on recent legislative efforts to help homeowners in distress. Please review this info. http://vrsam.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=Update Don't wait to contact the VA but please check back, or establish email contact for more info. I hope this helps, and be certain that VR SAM is most appreciative of your sacrifice and hope we can help. Joe |
